The life and nature she fosters inspire the colours I use, and the way I think and feel when creating my work.” Warm, tactile shades of brown, ochre, terracotta, moss-green and dusty orange typify the paintings in this series, combined with a distinct language of bold, curving forms. The earthy, organic tones, applied with deep brush strokes, heighten the works’ materiality, as if one could reach out to touch the surface of the paint and feel warm, sun-baked soil against one’s fingers, or the comforting rays of the sun itself. “Oil painting allows me to build deep, rich colours by gradually adding layers of hue over time,” says Richard. “I can spend hours mixing each colour as I add warmth and energy to my paintings. Colour is tied directly to energy, and for me, this energy comes from the complex structure and textures of the oils interacting with each other.” The textile piece in Say Your Words to the Sun is handstitched and hand-dyed by Richard, using silk tree cotton grown in Basse, Gambia. “The idea behind my textiles is to create something using only natural materials,” he says. “The organic dye is from plant matter, such as onion skins, which I might collect over a number of weeks. I like to be able to take these natural materials and turn them into something new. I stitch each aspect of the composition together, including strips of fabric made from braided wool. The work is completely from my hands.” Richard’s compositions begin as words that he writes in his sketchbook in response to his experiences and observations, which often become the title for each piece. He works instinctively, in a way that often leads to his paintings taking on the essence of what is going on his day to day life. Two (One) is characterised by dual forms, parallel, mirrored and extended. The paintings describe a cycle of two becoming one, but are also a documentation of inner growth and refocusing. For Richard, working on them has been accompanied by an emerging appreciation of difficult situations which, in contemplation, are revealed as necessary for further development of self. ‘Hold Me Up’ considers the possibility of leaning on the people around you; the forms and composition evoke feelings of being lifted up and supported. The series is another stepping stone on the journey of self-reflection that is Richard’s painting practice. When reflecting on my life to date, the concept of progression deeply resonated; in the face of setbacks, the only viable path is forward. I’ve since investigated different facets of this theme, focusing on precise elements in our lives that, when worked upon, facilitate growth. The painting over and over highlights the importance of repetition in honing your craft, while roots celebrates the strong foundation required for evolution. The duet of paintings, to be together and to be alone, reflects upon the equal significance of collaborating with others and of retreating inwards for profound reflection. My heritage played a key role in influencing this theme. Countless conversations with my father about the hardships he faced, and how he overcame them, have shaped my outlook. He taught me the spiritual, ancestral practices of the Yoruba tribe, who I can trace my lineage to. During my childhood, he would often recite an African story about ducklings and their instinct to follow their parents unconditionally, even into danger. The story plays on the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph of the duck to mean ‘son’.
